In 1980 the fifth estate’s Adrienne Clarkson investigated a Canadian connection to MK Ultra, the CIA’s covert mind control research program that was active during the 50s, 60s, and 70s. MK Ultra was the code name given to an illegal program of experiments on human subjects, with the goal of identifying drugs and procedures that the CIA could use during interrogations.
During the Cold War, the CIA funded a series of secret brainwashing experiments at a prestigious psychiatric clinic at McGill University. In our piece two Canadians spoke for the first time about their unwitting participation in these experiments.
The MK Ultra program became public in mid 70s. Starting in the late 1980s, both the CIA and the Canadian government became embroiled in lawsuits related to the programs and reached out of court settlements with many of the victims.
