It says that mankind as a whole is becoming more educated and intelligent and therefore is able live longer and more productively. For any given nation there is a correlation of the chart’s mentioned life-expectancy/wealth point and the average number of years of education of the country’s citizens. Perhaps plotting the same chart in 3-dimensions with education as the z-axis would be revealing.
